Hahaha that was fun. I'll have to do it again sometime. Anyway, it's been a long week and it's not over yet. This weekend should be interesting; that wedding I've been mentioning is finally upon me. Maybe there will be pictures posted here. I gotta head up to the ville pretty much right after class tomorrow, so I have to go pack. (Because when you have to get all dolled up, you need lots of things. If any girls read this, you will know exactly what I mean.)

I wake up way too early these days. I wish I could still make it on 5-6 hours a night.

  • Part 1

Oh my goodness third grade. I liked third grade a lot. My teacher was Mrs. Waldman and she was from Ohio. I was new to public school and I only made one friend that year, Becky. She was the tallest and most awkward girl in class; she had buck teeth and a lisp and went to speech sometimes instead of recess. I was kind of jealous of that because she got to do more reading than anyone else and I was a little book-whore even then. She didn't come back in third grade, and I never found out what happened to her; don't even remember her last name.
This was the year I first took an interest in art; I wanted to have something neat to do so the other kids would ask about it and then want to be my friend. (That didn't really work out.) This was also when I wanted to be a marine biologist, so I drew whales and dolphins fairly exclusively.

Anyway, I subbed third grade today and it really brought me back. Eight really is the best age ever. But again, I could not do it everyday. I named one kid Batman for the day because he shared a name with a Batman actor. He was thrilled until I told him that Batman never gets caught doing the wrong thing or loses his shoes in class. Another kid demanded that I call him HotDog (so I did). Then everyone wanted different names so there was an Angel, an Elizabeth, a Banana, and a Chuck. I think Elizabeth and Chuck were having an illicit affair because they were awfully friendly. As friendly as third grade boys and girls get, anyway.

    .............

Lethe of Heaven- Don't think I don't know what Lethe means. I like the pictures you take and the things that you make, even when I don't understand them. You're a great puzzle to me because you never give enough words; a true man of mystery. Every thing I learn is by some secondary inference, some dropped hat or phrase, some biased critique of art. I could be learning a truth, but I could be constructing an illusion. But maybe that's what you're after. Who can say?

    25 things

    OK godfatherofgreenbay, here you go.

    1. I wear a size 8 1/2 shoe. Wide. Which is so hard to find that I usually just suffer in medium width until the shoe stretches out a little.
    2. I've never bitten my fingernails, but I keep them short
    3. because I used to play clarinet.
    4. Now it's a habit and I can't help but cut them down every four days or so.
    5. I went to public school and I never got into trouble or jumped off of a bridge.
    6. I once considered changing my major to musical theatre. No shit.
    7. I hate volleyball with an undying passion because I was made to play it in elementary school
    8. If a guy has long, janky fingernails, I don't care how nice/rich/hot he is, he will never have a chance with me. Hugest turn-off ever.
    9. When I was in third grade I saw Free Willy and wanted to be a marine biologist for a few years afterward.
    10. I have always been vaguely angry, but am great at controlling it now, despite what you've been told. So if you thought I was aggressive, you were right.
    11. I've been seriously asked to get married twice.
    12. Never had allergies; feel bad for people who do.
    13. I have a sister who is only like me in her mule-headed-ness.
    14. I'm a sucker for an accent. It's gotten me in trouble before.
    15. I haven't spoken to my father since I was 15 or 16.
    16. Never thought I'd get into education.
    17. I don't eat seafood, period.
    18. It's difficult for me to hold on to friends, usually. I think I stop letting them be human in my head and when they fuck up royally and don't handle it as well as I think they can, I think less of them and it dies.
    19. I have more guy friends than girl friends. My friend Eddie says it is because I am aggressive and okay with it. I think guys are just easier to be friends with than chicks. [shrug]
    20. I have always loved spinach. Never gave my mother flak about eating vegetables. Only meat. My sis and I used to switch meat and vegetables.
    21. I've broken both of my arms (when I was 11 and 12); you can still feel where I broke them.
    22. I'm mainly left-handed, but ambidextrous about a few things.
    23. Want a quarter-sleeve tattoo really badly but haven't gotten around to drawing it up; I don't think it'll happen until my mother is either senile or gone from the good earth.
    24. People don't say my name a lot. Not to me, anyway.
    25. I don't play poker or any card game involving money. Won't even play poker if money isn't involved.

OH OH OH BEFORE I FORGET! STAR TREK COMES OUT ON DVD TODAY AND I AM GOING TO GET IT. Aiiieeee i am so excited

  • Copping a feel was a bad choice.

That kid is being punished. Let's just say that he is very lucky.

In other news, I was productive and studied for my final tomorrow. Joy to me.

Also (breaking news), I just got a phone call from Missouri from a man who wanted to speak with Elizabeth, who owns a dog kennel and has the same number as me. Strange.

    "May I speak with Elizabeth?"

"There is no Elizabeth here, you have the wrong number."

"Are you sure? She has a dog kennel; I'm looking for a certain kind of dog. Is this [insert my number here]?"

"Yes, that is my number, and there is no Elizabeth here. You have the wrong number."

    "Oh, ok, thanks."

Dune was good, now I can concentrate on The Historian.

  • You've Got Mail

I don't care what anyone says, I love You've Got Mail; I watched it last night during dinner. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are just lovely together (and in Sleepless in Seattle, too).

Another week is upon me. One class ends with a vicious test, and I go to a wedding. What else?

    .....

pretty, blank canvas, won't you speak to me?

    Old friends,

I am always glad to see you. Especially when it's been years.

Was going to the Renfest today, but got stuck in traffic and the two I was going to meet decided they were leaving early (it is an all-day thing, for the record) so we met for lunch instead. Then I went to meet my other old friend; the conversation was as good as hot chocolate and fire on a freezing day.

    ....

I think my favorite thing about where I live is hearing bugs and owls at night.

    .......

It's been 2117 days since I joined xanga, how about that?

  • So I killed it.

I wasn't really concerned with time or information; just hoping to keep my audience engaged. Having endured through the last few presentations through sheer force of will, I wanted my talk to be a little more interesting...I even had them watch a short bit of Sir Ken Robinson's TED talk on education, specifically the part about Gillian Lynne.

    I believe I was successful.

Now I have got my smock on and it is time to paint before I go completely off it.

  • So I've got this presentation to give tomorrow (today, later) on Exceptionality in my Special Pops. class. I love how my blog entry form is telling me "exceptionality" is misspelled. So basically, I have to talk for twenty minutes about smart kids. Well, it's really more complicated than that, but...

When I run out of statistics and assessment woes, I'll just talk about myself.

    ba-dum tchsssh

    really though, i'm stressin'

    haha this speaks to me

  • Where is my music itunes? o_O

I paid for it, I want it.

Florence and the Machine is like another Vetusta Morla, I just have to have the songs. Thanks to nimbusthedragon for introducing me to them.

Also fun music by Paolo Nutini.

    ...............

I think the internet-intensive age has given us all stellar lurking abilities. Some may hate that terminology but that's what it is. Most everyone has got that one site (or three) they always read and never comment on but if those people are like me, they look through the footprints and wonder why. As for me, I don't often feel I should say anything, unless it's one of those places that gets boatloads of comments...sometimes I do comment on the odd random site, but I do not generally hope for nor expect reciprocation; it is always a pleasant surprise to receive acknowledgment.

It's like giving your opinion where it may not be wanted. It is politeness, an etiquette thing. I really believe in social niceties that don't seem to exist anymore. There is a whole lot of speaking your mind to anyone or thing. Just because someone has opened themselves up to proverbial attack does not necessarily mean they should be attacked without provocation and even then, not without due consideration. Some fights just aren't worth it, and internet name-calling never is--having a reasonable discussion with someone who completely disagrees with you too often devolves into nastiness. If you're going to try and hit me, shoot through my reasoning, not my hairstyle; if you do, all I'm going to do is laugh.

(Yes, yes, yes I know that by putting your life/stories/thoughts/etc out there into the void, you open yourself up to criticism, opinions, judgement, comment war, tra la...but I do not try to partake in an activity that would anger someone. Ask my opinion, I will give it...but telling someone unasked that they're totally wrong about something, or taking comments personally...it's not the way. Yeah, guilty. I've said things I shouldn't have said, pissed people off, come across harsh, etc...but who hasn't? I try not to do these things anymore, the endeavor never ends. One day, I keep telling myself, I will be wonderfully poised and all kinds of gracious and refined. One day.)
